Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to commence its Fall 2009 season with an exhibition of works by Bruce Conner (1933-2008).  Most of the artworks in the show will be publicly exhibited for the first time.

This rediscovered panorama (from a period of 40 years: 1968 to last year) of drawings, collages and sculptures demonstrates the breadth and intricacy of his imaginative genius.

Two wall-mounted sculptural assemblages “King” 2008 and “Mom” (undated) bring together worn shapes and textures into domestic altars.  A series of folded inkblot drawings depicting a central leaf shape will be presented as a wall installation.  These leaves had a commemorative purpose for Conner, acting in homage to the events of 9/11. 

Bruce Conner heroically created a new lexicon of film and fine art for post-war America.  Repurposing found films, engravings and discarded objects, he explored precepts of metaphor and history, physical and metaphysical, by means of a new consciousness. Born 1933 in McPherson, Kansas, Conner moved to San Francisco in 1957 where he became a pivotal figure in the Beat scene of poets, writers, artists and performers.

Bruce Conner’s work was featured in the touring overview exhibition, 2000 B.C.: The Bruce Conner Story Part II, organized at the Walker Art Center.  His work is in the permanent collections of many museums including New York’s MoMA and the Whitney Museum, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, Los Angeles MOCA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Walker Art Center, LACMA, and SFMoMA
