Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present an exhibition of recent collage works by Thomas Aidala. Parallel to his international renowned architectural practice, Thomas Aidala has been making drawings, paintings and collages.  The paper collages to which he has devoted more time in recent years are the focus of this show.  All exhibited works were made in 2010.

In his own words: “The process of making proportionally-based, architecturally shaped spatial compositions in color—collage – mirrors the process inherent in architectural construction, though far less systematic and more improvisational.  Bits and pieces of material are sequentially and incrementally combined (as brush strokes would) to realize a larger construct, a visual expectation.”

Born in the Bronx, New York, Aidala attended Columbia University, graduated from The Cooper Union in New York, and the University of California, Berkeley’s College of Architecture.  His award-winning architectural projects range from firehouses to residences to the acclaimed Zellerbach Hall at UC Berkeley.  Living in Rome for 3 years, he worked with Luigi Moretti, Walter Gropius and the Architects Collaborative.  As the Principal Architect and Urban Designer for the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, he directed the design program of the rebuilding of Downtown San Jose.

Tom Aidala has been not only an architect, but a teacher, lecturer, author and painter.  He has taught and lectured at colleges and universities in the US and Europe, and was twice a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. He maintains his studio in Northern California.
