Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present an exhibition of new small paintings by Anne Appleby, Without Green.

The artist has conceived a suite of small multi-paneled paintings on wood.  Each of the panels is painted in thin encaustic layers, built up through a range of colors observed in the period of winter dormancy.  The absence of green marks the winter season, where grays, brown and rust colors dominate the snow-patched Western mountain landscape.

In her studio practice Anne Appleby intertwines the physical and spiritual attributes of the wilderness landscape.  Her experience and associations with the constantly changing palette of plant life, changed by seasons, pests, chemicals or climate change, is the subject of these delicate paintings.

Appleby has refined a painting technique that allies observation of color in nature with a technique of pure painterly abstraction. Her results are beautiful surfaces, with fine translucent layer upon layer of different colors in oil and wax media.

Anne Appleby’s works are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Berkeley Art Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, among others.  She maintains a studio and lives in Montana.
