Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce Present Tense, an exhibition of new work by Lynn Hershman. 

 

In her sixth solo exhibition at the gallery Hershman once again takes a hard look at contemporary society, creating insightful works in digital photography that explore the uncomfortable yet universal human predicament of perceiving and managing our bodies.  Through images of women of different ages, Hershman explores aging and nutrition, two omnipresent concerns that weave through our culture and entrenched systems of behavior.  She approaches advertising, cultural stereotypes and education and the ways interesting ironies have arisen regarding attraction, obsession and food, and expectations of body image and a long life.

 

In several works she posits a history of sugar, creating images of an industry linked to slavery that, now, in its ubiquitous forms, has enslaved people through distorted appetites and addictions.

 

In her career of more than 40 years, Lynn Hershman has been at the vanguard of both the feminist art movement and art embracing new technology. 

 

Her work will be shown in an upcoming exhibition at the MOMA, entitled 19 New Acquisitions, as well as at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The latter show, The Agent Ruby Files, will focus on Hershman Leeson's commissioned web project for the museum. A touring retrospective organized by the Henry Gallery opened in 2005 with an accompanying monograph from the University of California Press, Secret Agents, Private I: The Art and Films of Lynn Hershman Leeson. Hershman Leeson is also a Professor Emeritus at the University of California Davis and an A.D. White Professor at Large at Cornell University.
