Miguel Branco presents small sculptures constructed by a layered process in which he builds up his shape from a skeletal wire armature. Upon this he attaches carved wood pieces and, finally, an outer layer of pigmented femo ( a kind of low-fire modeling clay.)
Branco’s objects, in their reduced form, appear as perfect thoughts. They can be read as symbols or archetypes, and viewers feel encouraged by the works’ simplicity and accuracy to directly grasp their meaning. Branco’s animals, shapes, trees and heads, however, are enigmatic and remain open-ended. He creates these sculptures at the confluence of reality and imagination.
Living and teaching in Lisbon, Portugal, the artist has exhibited his paintings and sculptures for over twenty years in Portugal, France, England and the U.S.
Branco’s work is represented in major contemporary art collections of Portugal such as the Caixa Geral de Depositos and Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundaçao Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, as well as the Museu de Arte Moderna, Fundaçao de Serralves in Oporto.
