These pictures are of a temporary subterranean complex of temporary offices, staging rooms and studios built underneath the floor of Madison Square Garden arena. For the convention, the GOP planners raised built an artificial floor of the arena to accommodate this area.
These pictures were taken at Madison Square Garden in the span of ten minutes on August 27, 2004. Having gained access to Madison Square Garden with a 'pre-convention' pass, I was able to roam the building, occupied at that point by technicians and trades people putting the finishing touches on the construction.
Once the convention began, this area was off limits to credentialed press.

Using new technology to track, document and showcase the images, voices and writing of election culture, the artists Margaret Crane and Jon Winet are building a web-based portrait of the country in the throws of deciding on its next leader.
Over the past fifteen years, the collaboration Margaret Crane|Jon Winet has produced work that revolves around the language and images of the information age, focusing on the psycho-social dynamics of contemporary urban life.
