David Ireland
March 1 - 27, 2001

David Ireland will present a selection of the 18th and 19th -century oil paintings from the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum collection in an installation containing companion objects by the artist. The spirit of this dialogue between four centuries of art is to draw attention to the paintings and to concepts of art making and art presentation.

As the De Young Museum closes its doors to the public for the re-building of its facility in Golden Gate Park, Ireland's exhibition will bring new focus to its collection of art that is an acknowledged part of the History of Western Art. These paintings will be seen in a contemporary context where different ways of seeing art may apply.

In Gallery II, Ireland will present new work from his studio.

David Ireland is known for his process of discovery of objects, places and ideas already a part of our world. His credo "You Can't Make Art By Making Art" has been used as the title of one of his exhibitions, and offers a refreshing broader interpretation of some of the art world's tenets: originality, creativity and authorship. A retrospective traveling exhibition of Ireland's work is being organized by the Oakland Museum.

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, March 1st from 5:30 to 7:30pm.
