Deborah Butterfield
September 4 - October 6, 2023

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Deborah Butterfield. The artist will show a selection of sculptures in two formats, all unique works in cast bronze.

Butterfield is renowned for capturing the majesty and mystery of horses. Focusing for over 25 years on the image of these animals, for this exhibition Butterfield forms her elegant sculptures by hand from found branches, vines, and twigs. Her works are then cast in bronze to which she adds a patina. Articulating a tension between lightness and weight, movement and repose, Butterfield's refined compositions continue to show an expressive grace and beauty of line.

Deborah Butterfield's bronze sculptures have been installed permanently in many cities as public artwork. Her work is shown and collected internationally with recent presentations on the lawn of the White House, at the Muse Bourdelle in Paris, and at the Festival of International Sculpture in Monte Carlo. Butterfield is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among other institutions.

A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, September 6, from 5:30 to 7:30pm, at Gallery Paule Anglim.
