David Hannah

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to exhibit an installation of new work by David Hannah.

David Hannah will present mixed media paintings featuring a technique he has developed and refined over the last ten years. Made from ink and silicone applied to a parchment-like mylar vellum surface that he sometimes burns, perforates and collages, Hannah's artworks reference the disciplines of photography, drawing, collage and relief sculpture.

Hannah's last two shows have investigated faces: both his own countenance and those of the controversial historical figures, Martin Heidegger and Werner Heisenberg. Hannah's new imagery revisits the world of the philosopher Heidegger, using Heidegger's face as his subject. In addition, Hannah will present works entitled, "Holzweg," nearly abstract images of forest paths referencing Heidegger's discourses on the definitions of art-making and of the unique role of the artwork. Heidegger's essay examines the word "Holzweg" as a path cut into the woods, a path created to get further into the woods, yet not necessarily leading anywhere. This image is used metaphorically for both understanding the nature of art, and the pursuit of knowledge in a broader sense.

Thomas Plagemann

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to exhibit an installation of new drawings by Thomas Plagemann.

Thomas Plagemann will present mixed media drawings that appear at first to be antique drawings on parchment. Upon closer inspection, the works reveal themselves to be sophisticated super-perspectival narratives that play with historical imagery and science fiction. Plagemann's drawings are nearly monochrome compositions of sepia-toned fine lines to which he has carefully given the appearance of wear and age. Plagemann's comfortable illusion ends as one notices these nearly familiar images are filled with strange machinery and creatures, some not human.

My subjects often derive from a desire to explore the great expectations and colossal failures of humanity directed by technology. --T.Plagemann

The artist finds beauty in conflict and decay, presenting artworks that marvel in fictitious events, presented with a theatricality that pays equal homage to Piranesi and Hollywood storyboards.

This will be the artist's second show at Gallery Paule Anglim. His works have recently been collected by the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts (Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco) and the Contemporary Museum, Hawaii.

Please join us for a reception for the artists at Gallery Paule Anglim on Wednesday, April 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
