ANDREW MASULLO
August 2 - 26, 2006

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Andrew Masullo, August 2 through August 26th.

For over ten years Andrew Masullo has made small abstract oil paintings in a numbered series. On stretched canvas, these brightly-colored simple compositions trigger responses both serious and playful. Using a palette of nearly primary yet not quite pastel hues, he explores permutations of shape and color that provoke thoughtful comparison to great authors of abstract art while retaining the immediacy of a child's drawing.

Masullo has shown these works in Europe and New York, and one was featured on the cover of the Paris Review.

Writer and curator Michael Duncan writes of this on-going series:
With their generally modest scale... and deliberate execution, Masullo's works could be the outcome of discreet scientific experiments performed on unsuspecting lumps and blobs. If so, his lab is dedicated to the tradition of comic abstract painting that includes artists such as Miro, Klee, Arp, Calder, Paul Feeley, Myron Stout, Frederick Hammersley and Thomas Nozkowski. Fine company indeed.
A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, August 3rd from 5:30 7:30 p.m.

RICHARD OVERSTREET
August 2 - 26, 2006

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Richard Overstreet, August 2 through August 26th.

The Paris-based artist will present a new group of color wax drawings on paper. Previous shows at Gallery Paule Anglim have featured ink drawings and wax paintings on wood.

Although Overstreet lives and works primarily in France, he keeps a studio in the Bay Area where he was raised and has exhibited his work for over 30 years. Since the early 70's his work has been regularly shown in both the U.S. and Europe.

Overstreet is also an acknowledged film-maker, practicing since the 1950's. His experience with film and photography perhaps affords him a greater sensitivity to the subtleties of light, darkness and the suggestion of depth. His shadowy forms hover between abstraction and representational objects or figures.

Richard Overstreet has been the recipient of the 1985 SECA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 3rd from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
