Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent works by TONY LABAT.
Labat will present a spectrum of works using photography, video, drawing, collage, painting and digital prints. Featured will be two video works, Day Labor: Mapping the Outside (Fat Chance Bruce Nauman) 2006 and Mata Crush
2006, shown at the recent Seville Biennial and Havana Biennial, respectively.
Since the early eighties Labat has been an important participant in the California performance and video scene. A pioneer of video installations, his work often identifies the “outsider”, whether the artist or the immigrant.
Born in Cuba, he makes frequent commen-tary on displacement and marginalization. In Day Labor: Mapping the Outside… he sets up a surveillance system from his studio window, observing day workers waiting to be picked up for temporary work. The split-screen video and the workers themselves divide into groups of visual codes: painters, carpenters, gardeners, etc. The artist is mimicking institutional surveillance, while participating in the workers passivity.
Labat received his BFA and MFA degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute and teaches performance and video there. His
video works have been exhibited internation- ally and found in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunstmuseum, Bern, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Long Beach Museum of Art.
