William Tucker - Monotypes and Sculpture
William Tucker - Monotypes and Sculpture
July 5 through August 4, 2023
Reception for the Artist: Saturday July 7, 4-6pm
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present new work by the celebrated sculptor William Tucker.
The artist's exhibition will feature a series of hand-worked monotypes and new small sculptures. To the monotype prints he has added color and texture with oil paint and charcoal.
Tucker re-evaluates the vocabulary of shapes in classical sculpture: the head, torso, hands and animal forms (especially horse heads) and addresses them as archetypal experiences. Reviving the practice of executing forms in plaster (to be cast in bronze), he explores volume and mass as it relates to a primal perception. In the 1980's, developing the first works in this new approach, he described his interest,
"...that a language could be found to express this ancient theme, the standing figure, without reference to its external aspect."
Tucker's 1974 publication, The Language of Sculpture, is an influential discussion of the discipline and a widely used reference. The recent monograph, The Sculpture of William Tucker, commissioned by the Henry Moore Foundation and written by Joy Sleeman, provides a complete overview of his works and career. (Publ. Lund Humphries 1974)
